Final Project

Final Project Preparation
In week 1, we should watch short motion shorts and shortlist 3 stop motions shorts in a slide and provide reasons (style, art direction, character design...) This task can inspirated us about the direction of our final slow motion project.

Ideation
Our idea is about the main character casually tossed an empty alumminium can on the ground after taking a sip. Suddenly, he was hit on the head by an unknown object. He looked at it and saw that it was the garbage he had just discarded on the ground. Dismissing it, he kicked the object away and continued on his way. To his surprise, a looming shadow appeared, revealing a hungry trash can ready to devour the main character. Panicking, he attempted to escape, but accidentally tripped over the drink he had just discarded. In the end, the trash can swallowed him up.

Our idea is using paper to build up the background and building. For the character, we will use clay to do it. The general style combines humor with a touch of horror.

Storyboard
We shared our storyboard with Mr. Martin, and he gave us feedback. He liked the idea and suggested adding some close-up shots to highlight the hot day aspect.

Preparing before Shooting
fig 2.1 Cutting progress

First, we use paper to make some building and background for our video.

fig 2.2 First attempt

This is our first try. After that, we create more props like tree, car and stone for the background video set-up.

Then, we placed and arranged the props that we have on a table. At bottom, we put black paper to represent road.

Following that, we covered the background with a blue curtain to symbolize the sky. We crafted the sun by cutting paper, and for the clouds, we used cotton.

fig 2.7 - 2.8 Two main characters

To create the main character and the bin, we opted for clay since they needed to be mobile in our video. We believed that using clay would add a more three-dimensional feel compared to paper.

Shooting Process
fig 3.1 Shooting set-up

We started shooting after we create all the props needed. We use two tripod stands during shooting period. One is for the lighting and one is for the camera shooting.

fig 3.2 - 3.3 Stop motion app

We utilized a stop-motion app to capture each scene, adhering to our storyboard. The app proved to be highly effective and user-friendly.

Editing Process
fig 3.4 Sound effects

We found a lot of sound effects and background music in order to include into our video.

Next, we import all the sound that we want into Adobe Premiere Pro and adjust it in the audio track.

fig 3.6 - 3.7 Editing color in Pr

For color correction, there are two different tones in our video which is warm tone (for beginning and ending) and cold tone (for climax).

fig 3.8 Warm tones

Warm color tone applied to show that it is in a hot sunny day.

fig 3.9 Cold tones

Cold color tone applied to show that it is horror when the main character chasing by the bin monster.

Reflection

Stop Motion

For this project, I teamed up with my classmate, Xiaohui, to tackle the stop-motion assignment. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, finding it both fun and educational. This project was no as easy as ABC; we had to brainstorm, decide on ideas, and prepare props independently. Initially, we were clueless, but after some research and brainstorming, we found our direction. Throughout the process, we supported each other whenever problems arose, and I want to express my gratitude to her for that. From prop preparation to shooting and editing, we invested a considerable amount of time. We applied all the knowledge we acquired in this module to bring our final project to life. We are pleased with the outcome we achieved.
