Project 1 Progress

Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing
In this project, we are required to do audio dubbing for a muted clip. The clip will be provided. First, we should identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound. Hence, Mr. Martin told us to prepare a audio spreadsheet before we started editing our clip. I had asked my friend to send me the sample of audio spreadsheet format.

Then, I watched the clip given and list down all the visual sound that needed in the clip. I list down the ambience sound first and following by the sound effect.

Recording Dialogue
After finishing the spreadsheet, I had record the dialogue that needed by using voice recorder. There are 4 different people having dialogue. However, all the sounds I recorded were same as I would be using the audio tools to adjust sound in later edits.

Finding Sound Effect
I had found the ambience sound and sound effect via online. The website that I used for finding the sound effects:
Then, I insert them into Adobe Premiere Pro.

Editing Clip
After I insert the sound effects, I started doing my editing progress. I placed all of the audio into the clip. For the dialogue part, I edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid by following the steps:
  • Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones.

In the project's requirement, the volume for dialogue need to be between -6dB & -12dB, ambience sound should below -20dB and hard sound effects are depend on the situation of the clip. Therefore, I need to adjust the volume by adjusting the volume gain.

Exercise 2: Sound Shaping
In exercise 2, we need to record our 5 seconds own voice and edit it into different sound effects. The task given:
  • Voice of phone call
  • Voice coming from inside of closet
  • Voice of toilet/bathroom
  • Underground cave
  • Alien/ Orc voice
I will record the sentence 'In this Project - Audio Editing, I will learn about sound shaping with EQ.' Then, I record it with my phone.

Then, I import it into Adobe Audition and started my editing progress. I followed the instruction and steps given by lecturer to complete this task. However, the last effect which is Alien effect did not mentioned in the slide. Therefore, I found the tutorial video via online and apply it into the alien track.

Reflection

Exercise 1
From this exercise, I learned on how to identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound. Besides, I gained a lot of editing skills when doing this project in Adobe Premiere Pro. I think it is really an useful software for us to edit a video. The most challenging things for me is finding a suitable sound effects via online. This is because most of the sound are not free. I had spent a lot of time to complete it. In short, I enjoyed doing this task and appreciated that I had learned some new skills.

Exercise 2
In the second exercise, my main struggle is getting the hang of the tools in Adobe Audition since it's my first time using them. Fortunately, the slides and notes provided by the lecturer have been really helpful in showing me the ropes. I have learned how to use these tools to transform and create different sound effects. Besides, I noticed that this process is crucial for making sounds just right in movies and TV shows.
