Project 3: Digital triptych
Choose a story from the linked website. Break down the narrative of the chosen story into 3-act structures of Introduction - Climax - Epilogue. Then create 3 panels digital triptych illustrating each of the act.

The challenges are:
  • Only one story from this website: https://poestories.com/stories.php
  • No, you cannot use other story than the ones from the website
  • Visuals are displayed in a series of three
  • Include short non-spoiler text for each act

Research:

From the website, the story that I choose is 'The Spectacles' by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a great little comedy about love at first sight. After reading the story, I list out the characters and also the summary of the story. Then, I split it into three part which is setup, conflict and resolution.

Sketches:

I had draw roughly sketch on it with two different ideas for each part:
  • Part 1 is about the character, Napoleon Buonaparte fell in love with Nantucket, a beautiful and popular widow with at first sight in Opera.
  • Part 2 is about when the young man puts on the magical spectacles, he sees Nantucket's true countenance, but he is shocked because she appears ugly and terrifying.
  • Part 3 is about Napoleon Buonaparte decided to see the world without spectacles as we often judge others through our own lenses and easily fall into misunderstandings and misjudgments
Development progress:

I found some images via Google or Pinterest which suitable for my style design. Then, with the references, I create my d
igital triptych.

Reflection
In Project 3, I learned more techniques to improve my art work by using Adobe Illustrator. After I learned the skills on adding texture on the shape that we make, I tried to apply it into my digital triptych. In addition, the new tools that I learned is Slice tool in class. I use it to cut out the unnecessary shape and line during the progress. Except  the skills of using Adobe Illustrator tools, this project also challenged us to arrange the direction of the story and restore the scenes that best fit that part of the story in our own way. I really enjoy the journey of making it as we can use our way and style to describe a story in graphic form.
