T2: Design Proposition

Task Two is the continue process on Task One (Empathize & Define):
  • Further develop user insights and analyze data gathered from user interviews.
  • Create User Personas based on the analyzed user research data.
  • Develop User Journey Maps to visualize user experiences.

Progress
fig 2.1  Initial User Persona

In the fourth week, we created user personas based on our individual interviewees. However, following consultation with Mr. Shamsul, we were instructed to develop personas based on four majority groups derived from all interview data.

fig 2.2 References for User Persona

Mr. Shamsul shared reference images for user persona during our Zoom meeting consultation. I downloaded and saved them for later review.

fig 2.3 User Persona Adjustment

After the meeting, I made a list of what we needed for the user persona and sent it to the group, so we'd all use the same layout. I added motivations and app usage, since I thought they were important based on Mr. Shamsul's example in Figure 2.2.

fig 2.4 - 2.5 User Persona Template

In Canva, I located a fitting user persona template and customized it to provide enough space for the content and subtitles.

fig 2.6 Notifications in Group

After designing the user persona in Canva, I shared the template with the group to ensure consistent formatting.

fig 2.7 Information in Teams

This week, I observed a change in instructions posted on Teams by Mr. Chui. We were directed to develop user personas and journey maps based on distinct user groups. Consequently, Xiao Hui and I finalized four user persona characters, derived from our twelve interviewees.

User Persona 01 (Janice)
  • Student (full time)
  • Frequent outdoor participant (Once a week or more) - friends/ classmates
  • Outdoor activity - Shopping/ citywalk
  • Pain points - transportation, budget
  • Needs - platform easy to discover activities
  • Current App - XiaoHongShu
  • Prefer - App - personalize recommendations, activities real time updates
User Persona 02 (KaiXin)
  • Student (full time)
  • Seldom outdoor participant (Once every few weeks or rarely) - alone
  • Outdoor activity - Sports
  • Pain points - no one accompany/ difficult matching schedule/ character issue
  • Needs - new friends
  • Current App - Social media
  • Prefer - App - personalize recommendations, user-friendly ui
User Persona 03 (XiaoHui)
  • Student (Junior worker)
  • Frequent outdoor participant (Once a week or more) - friends
  • Outdoor activity - Cafe Hopping
  • Pain points - location, time
  • Needs - Updates activities
  • Current App - XiaoHongShu, Google Maps
  • Prefer - App - Integrate with maps feature / location filter
User Persona 04 (JzeShin)
  • Student (Junior worker)
  • Frequent outdoor participant (Once a week or more) - family
  • Outdoor activity - Sports
  • Pain points - Location, struggle to find activities
  • Needs - New friends

  • Prefer - App - personalize recommendations

fig 2.8 Initial User Journey Map

In Week 5, during our consultation with Mr. Shamsul, he advised us to enhance our user journey map by including touchpoints, expectations, and pain points, as our current version, which only featured tasks, emotions, and opportunities, was insufficient.

He share a lot of useful link for us as a references. Therefore, we can proceed the task with the correct format.

After every consultation, Kaixin consistently distributed the notes she had taken, allowing the group to remember and revisit the feedback.

fig 2.11 User Journey Map Adjustment

Following Mr. Shamsul's feedback on the user journey map, I discussed with Xiao Hui to add more subtitles, aiming for a comprehensive representation.

fig 2.12 Slide by Xiaohui

To save time on creating a new presentation for Task 02, Xiao Hui simply used her slides from Task 01, making adjustments as needed.

I helped for create the User Journey Map's slide in this group presentation slide.

fig 2.14 User Journey Map Refinement

To provide context for the user journey maps, I added a summary section for each user persona, detailing their relevant scenarios. For improved understanding, I also incorporated four unique labels for each persona.

Last but not least, I added the Task 2 summary to the last page and, as team leader, submitted the assignment.

Feedback
Week 4
Mr. Shamsul found my user persona draft to be the most comprehensive and recommended it as a guide. He pointed out, however, that it lacked certain details, specifically app usage related to our project. He then instructed us to adopt a uniform user persona template.

Week 5
This week's feedback focused on the user journey map. Mr. Shamsul noted that the map lacked sufficient components, particularly pain points, and suggested using the IBM customer journey map resource as a reference. He also requested progress updates on the information architecture and user flow by next week. Additionally, he instructed us to conduct card sorting with individual users and emphasized that everyone should actively participate in the user flow development, applying usability principles.

Reflection

This task built upon our previous work from Task 01, which involved gathering interviewee data to create user personas and user journey maps. While the initial stages proceeded smoothly, we were informed by our lecturer that Task 03 would be significantly more demanding. This caused anxiety within the group, as we were concerned about having sufficient time to complete the remaining tasks, including prototype development and presentation preparation. Despite the relatively relaxed pace of this task, I learned the importance of proactively starting on subsequent tasks, leveraging the flexibility of our project timeline. Furthermore, I recognized my crucial role as group leader in providing clear instructions, guidance, and driving the overall project progress. I am grateful for my team members' consistent cooperation, which enabled us to meet all deadlines.

Having previously created user personas and user journey maps, I had prior experience with the process. I reviewed my past learnings and applied them to this task. I observed that the design process generally follows a consistent procedure, with each stage generating new ideas that contribute to a progressively better proposal.
