Bachelor of Design in Creative Media
- Method of understanding art that focuses on an artwork’s visual elements, such as color🌈, line📏, texture👚, and scale⚖.
- It is a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.😎
- Recognize the choices that an artist made in creating the artwork.🌌
- Better understand how the formal properties of an artwork communicate ideas, content, or meaning.💬
- I choose this design work as it appeals to me at first glance.💗 I think it is an interesting picture. The colourful background and the vulnerable child🚸 formed by leaving white space in the middle are really touched me.😢 It seems to describe the topic- Zero Hunger that all kinds of food in this world🌍 do not belong to the them, they are empty, pitiful...
- Phase 1: Observation👀
- The design work is in portrait format. As for visual elements, the background comes in many colours. Overall, it is a colourful design.💅 There are many types of food combined together to form the background. Some of it is big, some is small. At the middle, there was a part of the white space, which at first glance looked like a skinny little child reaching out for food.😕Below the art work, there are some words.
- Phase 2: Analysis🔍
- The background of this design is variety. It contains a lot of food which in different size, shape and colour.𝍔 However, at the middle, it just contain a white shape of skinny little child.🛉 Therefore, it forms contrast principle in this artwork to show the difference between two of it. Viewer will first notice the central🥅 of image - Skinny little child - rendered in white. From here we know that the emphasis is on the middle of image. Besides, the direction of skinny little child outstretched hand is the upper left highlighting the⚡ background food. (movement). The layout has proportion, which establishes hierarchy: the largest image is displayed first, followed by the slightly smaller words. ✍
- Phase 3: Interpretation💬
- This is a poster designed by Finn Nygaard in 2016.The poster was created for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) campaign and aims to raise awareness about the goal of eradicating hunger worldwide.🌏 It showed at the exhibition on January 12 – April 9 at Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen. I noticed that Finn Nygaard like to use minimalist and impactful design style which often features bold typography and striking imagery on his work. The use of high-contrast white photography, bold typography, and simple color schemes is a recurring theme in his design work.💡The modernist tradition of Scandinavian graphic design, which emphasises simplicity, utility, and straightforward communication, is one source that has impacted Finn Nygaard's design aesthetic. 👑
Design process and Idea exploration
IDEA 1
My first idea is about even there are a lot of food in the world but there are many children in Africa who do not have food to eat.🍲 Seriously, they do not even have the food they need to survive. Hence, I put a skinny child at the central of my design work and surrounded by all the delicious food. However, the child's face looked unhappy to show that none of these foods had anything to do with the child.😞
IDEA 2
Final Outcome
From this design, I would like to convey the information which is unfair distribution of food in order to increase people's awareness. Unfair food distribution happens when some people have limited or no access to food, while others have more than enough.👥 This situation had showed in my design (upper and lower). It's like an hourglass. Food scraps from one side flow to the other, creating a cycle. However, it is unknown whether the hourglass mechanism will work again if this situation continues. Will there be a reversal or a lose-lose both?😕
Lecturer's feedback
I had asked Mr. Charles about my first idea which is fig 2.2 through WhatsApp. 📲He said that the child appears to be overstuffed from his angle. Although the design is entertaining but the message might not be clear.🚫
After this, I tried to extend my first idea and decided to split into two extremes in the design. I showed fig 2.2.1 in our last lecture class. Mr. Charles suggested that I can replace the people above with people in colour to highlight the difference between two condition.🆚For background, the intersection between two condition can have a gradient feeling.☝ Besides, words of 'Zero Hunger' can be removed and focus on visual image effects in the design work.
Reflection
In this final project, I had 3 weeks to complete it. As this project's requirement is choose one goal from United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and I would like to focus on Zero Hunger, I learned how to convey my idea via my artwork to reach person's awareness.⚠
Throughout this assignment, I had research about the topic of Zero Hunger in order to better understand about the impact💣of this issue on society at this stage and the investigation of the reasons for achieving Zero Hunger in the world. In short, understanding is for the purpose of making better of this art work.🎨
In design, thinking and problem solving skills is indispensable. In addition to thinking about how to integrate ideas into the design work, I also need to find a more suitable and perfect method when encountering problems in creation progress.🤔
