Recap of selected design principle

Balance👯

  • The distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
  • Used to add stability, add structure, create emphasis and to create dynamics.

  • Three main types of balance:

Word and Image🙈
  • Promote legibility and help to communicate the messaging, tone, and sentiment of a design piece.
  • There are many type of fonts that can be used in image.

  • Choosing suitable fonts can increase the visual feel of the overall design.

  • Imagery is  a visual representation of items, people, scenery, and ideas through photos, illustrations, drawings, and graphics.
  • Images are vital part of visual language, which helps communicate information quicker than text.

Balance
  • I found that majority examples of balance contains two sides of an object.👼👿
  • It can be two extremes or complementary or even different types of object.
  • Left  vs  Right  /  Up  vs  Down

Word and Image
  • Most of the posters are related to the principle of word and image to convey details to viewers.
  • These types of design using image and words which related to each others to form a picture.
  • Image + Words = Picture 📲

Design process and Idea exploration
After learning through my selected design, I decided to make my design digitally. 💻

Balance
  • My ideas for this design principle is unite in this rabbit year-2023. 🐇
fig. 2.2.1 Progress (Balance)

At first, I separate the circle in two part which is earth and moon to represent two different planet. As 2023 is rabbit year so the fauna I use rabbit. 🐰

fig. 2.2.2 Progress (Balance)

To express that we all are special, I used different pattern and types of rabbits and humans. Then, I put them to form a circle which express the meaning of unite and gather together. 🤲

fig. 2.2.3 Progress (Balance)

I had added more details on it such as the elements on sky and universe. However, I thought it is a bit messy so I tried to remove some of it.

Word and Image
  • First, I would like to use a quote to create a design. After researching, my idea is using:
fig. 2.2.4 Quotes from Google (Word and Image)

fig. 2.2.5 Progress (Word and Image)

The keyword of the quote is time and pilot. I draw the pilot and plane on the sky first. It is just the back of the character and looking ahead. The direction of them looking will be the space of quotes using. 🚡

fig. 2.2.6 Progress (Word and Image)

Next, I added the concept of time. The time is flying around the sky to represent time flies. For the colour of words, I would like to change it into dark colour so it can be read easily.👍

                                             Final outcome
Balance

fig. 2.3.1 Final outcome- Together (Balance)

In this universe, we are all special and independent individuals. Even if we are not the same but gathering together is the symbol of unity. Hopefully all of us hold hands to maintain world peace as rabbit in this rabbit year.👭👬

Word and Image

fig. 2.3.2 Final outcome- Be our own pilot (Word and Image)

The bad news is time flies, but the good news is you're the pilot. Clock flying in the air represents time. We are like the little girl or even duck who wearing plane cap. That means it is up to you to take yourselves in the right direction. 🎯

                                 Lecturer's feedback

On week 2, I had showed some draft of my ideas to Dr. Charles which was shown as fig. 2.4 below. My beginning idea is about Chinese New Year. For balance, I put two rabbit at below and middle include variety of new year elements. Dr. Charles said that I should think about what I would like to express through my design. He suggested me to focus on one idea that can represent my theme. 💭

fig. 2.4.1 Draft (Balance)

I talked about gather together as it is one of the word in my mind when Dr. Charles asked me that what is about Chinese New Year. He gave me a very good idea which is putting the rabbit together and form it into circle to convey the meaning of gather. I also can include some specific new year elements such as 'lousang' as it is in circle also.

                                           Reflection

Via this exercise given, I had learnt more about the design principle. Before this, I just know the names of design principle. But now, I understand on how to apply it into our artworks especially balance and word and image. Balance principle means that the artworks make viewers feel the consistency of the overall effect in visual weight.

However, word and image principle means to create the design which can obviously convey the information through words and image. This is a challenging task. After all, everyone's understanding is different. Therefore, choosing what kind of fonts, words and images are one of the essential key. 🔑

fig. 2.5.1 TGCs that I acquired from this exercise

Based on fig.2.5.1, my thinking skills had been improved after I research on design principle and tried to create an artworks.

fig. 2.5.2 TGCs that I acquired from this exercise

According to fig.2.5.2, I studied on the design principle not just only via lecture recording and also some videos on Youtube. I found many inspiration from there. ✌
